Painting the figure
with matt duckett
Join artist and Great River Arts staff member Matt Duckett for an afternoon as we explore painting the figure and portrait from life. Topics include creating a palette, composition, drawing, likeness, color mixing, edges and brush work.
Matt Duckett has exhibited across the United States and internationally, in galleries including the Salmagundi Club in NYC and Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ. He has been recognized with awards and multiple national publications for excellence in art, including Fine Art Connoisseur and Poets & Artists. He has created bodies of work that explore various subcultures and marginalized peoples, from Scandanavian traditional lifestyles in rural Wisconsin, to Chicago's unique Irish musical heritage, to displaced aboriginal tribes in the remote mountains of the Philippines. Matt weaves storytelling and characterization together with a mastery of technique to create portraits that go beyond likeness with their layers of meaning, story and atmosphere.

Creating a mug rug is a great way to practice new techniques, try out new fabrics, and bust a stash of scraps. They can be simple or complex pieces of usable art, fantastic gifts, and are quick to create. In this class, you will learn how color and value will enhance your fiber art, and how to:
Paper piece, free motion quilt, attach binding, appliqué, add embellishments, and 'quilt as you go'
You can choose from 5 original designs of mug rugs that I will provide.
This class is designed with a few things in mind, it is for beginners as well as experienced quilters, and it is all about fun and enjoyment.
Your Instructor: My name is Joe Muehlbauer and I have been an artist for over 20 years. I started my "sewing" career about 15 years ago by making porcelain dolls. I then entered the world of quilting and never looked back. I have won several awards for quilting, illustrations, and photography. I enjoy all mediums of art from pottery to metalwork, jewelry to quilting. But my favorite thing to do is teach others and share my knowledge of art and design.
Adult Mug Madness will be a great time learning how to build mugs and use the potters wheel!
