Perfume River Nights is an exciting debut novel in which Maurer, in an often poetic style, tells a gut-wrenching story of war that will have readers needing to catch their breath but unable to turn away. Friendships deepen within the deadly arena of war evoking promises that are hard to keep and even harder to amend. Tensions flare with lives at risk. Readers will feel the terror that looms beyond the next turn in the jungle trail. Perfume River Nights is a book that is hard to read without being deeply moved. When you turn the last page you’ll wish there was more.
All royalties benefit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.

MIDNIGHT RIVER BOOK RELEASE
Tuesday, June 7, 2017
6 - 8 pm
selected reading by author at 6:30 pm
Little Falls, MN May 18, 2016 — Friends of Laura Hansen will be hosting a book release party at Great River Arts Center in Little Falls on Tuesday, June 7th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event – which is open to the public – features a reception, poetry reading and book signing. Hansen - a resident of Little Falls - is the Winner of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies’ Stevens Poetry Manuscript Competition.
Asked about the competition, Ms. Hansen told us that she received word at the beginning of the year that she had won. Hansen reluctantly admits that she almost hung up on Competition Chair, Wilda Morris, as she thought the call was a scam. Morris went on to explain that the award included a cash prize plus publication of the winning poetry collection, Midnight River.
Stevens Competition Judge and former Wisconsin Poet Laureate, Bruce Dethlefson, says the poems in Midnight River; “are [an example of] what great poetry is and what great poetry does right”. Distinguished Minnesota poet Kathryn Kysar writes, “Midnight River is a gift, each poem a perfectly wrapped package of observations, memories, and truth.” International best-selling author Douglas Wood (Old Turtle) adds that reading Midnight River “is like coming home”.
The poems in Midnight River were written over the course of twenty years, years during which Laura was working six days a week as a bookseller and local business owner. And though many of the poems are about family and home, they are also filled according to author Diane Glancy with “all the songs of the natural world”.
Midnight River is Hansen’s first full-length book though she previously self-published three chapbooks, Diving the Drop-off, Why I Keep Rabbits and Writing from the Milkhouse. She has also been published in regional literary journals and magazines, appeared on Lakeland Public Television and has had poems aired on Northern Community Radio and National Public Radio.
A former board member of Great River Arts and the Five Wings Arts Council, Laura was presented earlier this year with a Community Arts Leadership Award. Laura Hansen is a 1975 graduate of Little Falls Community High School and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN.
