Fate has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in The Scarlet Pimpernel epic and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. Will Charlotte appear or run off with their agent? Will George be sober enough to emote? Will Capra see Cyrano, Private Lives, or a disturbing mixture of the two? Hilarious misunderstandings pile on madcap misadventures in this valentine to Theatre Hams everywhere.

Galactic Cowboy Orchestra

MARCH 10, 2017

doors 6:30 pm
show 7:30 pm

tickets $12

The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra  has been freakin' minds for 6 years! Since 2009, the band has stretched their own musical limits with album after album of intensely energetic ART-ROCK. Definition of ART-ROCK: A type of rock music, often with poetic lyrics, characterized by sophisticated harmonic, dynamic and technical complexity based on forms derived from classical (and jazz) music and requiring performers of considerable training and skill.

It sounds so serious, but when you combine that type of music with four fun-loving musicians who don't take themselves too seriously and who have a love of so much music beyond art-rock (which is why the band covers songs from Otis Rush's All Your Love to Whipping Post to When the Levee Breaks to YYZ), you get a bit of magic in live music form. The band writes and performs music that excites them and has a blast doing it! The GCO appreciates and aspires to superior musicianship while combining their love of a good riff, hummable melody and groovy jam... over a jazz/jazz-rock musical bedrock. It all culminates in an intensely energetic live performance because "we freakin' love what we do and love that the fans dig it too!! "

14 FRIDAYS CONCERT SERIES

CHARLES GILBERT KAPSNER SALON

OCTOBER 14, 2016

6 - 9 pm

The Salon was first born in the 18/19th century France—Paris in particular. It allowed painters to work towards a goal of having a work judged into the annual Salon, which was widely visited by patrons and the general public. One must remember at the time, it was an important part of a painter’s career to be accepted by the establishment, a “feather in one’s cap” if you will.

My idea for the Salon began in 2008 as a way to hold an event that united and celebrated the various artistic disciplines—visual, dance, music, singing, costumes, sculpture, poetry. Critically important was the inclusion of artists from the region.

My first Salon focused on the body of work I created which focused on my floral series. Each year, the focus changes—including themes of “The River”, “Italy”, and “Generations”, but the unification of the arts is central. Through my painting I want to promote a diverse body of work, and invite the viewing audience access to the creative process across disciplines.

This year will include drawings and painting, as well as etched stonework (Chris Welch) which has a rich tradition dating back to the Egyptians, and poetry (Laura Hansen) which uses the written word and its structure to evoke emotion. Music includes Eastern European folks songs (Sestri) and country/folk/Americana band Harper’s Chord led by GRA’s own Jill Moore.

The blending of local talent showcases and promotes the creative energy of people who live in the region—shattering the myth that creativity exists only in big cities.

Bringing these various disciplines together for an evening is my way of making arts, and artists, accessible, and enriching the community. Diversity of experience opens the mind to a broader way of thinking.  The Salon is designed with hopes that the audience explores other events, venues, and supports the arts across disciplines—whether it’s purchasing one-of-a-kind paintings, books, attending a concert or ballet, artists need patrons.

A culture is measured by not only by the art produced, but how the public supports it. Thank you for supporting the talented artists, from all disciplines, who enrich our region.

There is no cost for this event.

The band specializes in a range of styles from country rock, fifties and gospel, playing hits from country legends such as Charley Pride, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Conway Twitty, just to name a few.

HOLLYWOOD OR BUST

JASON SCHOMMER

SEPTEMBER 7, 2016

Before packing his bags and hitting the road for a job in Hollywood, comedian Jason Schommer returns by popular demand to Great River Arts for one night only with “Hollywood or Bust!” a hysterical night of stand-up comedy presented on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 PM. Jason Schommer, a Little Falls native, will be moving to Hollywood in early September to work behind the scenes in TV production on the FX Network comedy “Baskets” starring Zach Galifianakis and Louie Anderson. The series, which begins filming its second season this fall, was co-created by comedy masterminds Louis C.K. and Zach Galifianakis and follows the misadventures of Chip Baskets who dreams of being a classically trained French clown but falls on hard times and ends up moving back home with his Mother while working at a rodeo. Minnesota comedy icon Louie Anderson plays his mother, Christine Baskets, and has earned an Emmy nomination for this performance for season one. Jason Schommer will be Louie Anderson’s stand-in on the production set.

MIXTAPE: STORIES AND SONGS FROM A CRAZY LIFE!

STORIES AND COMEDY BY JASON SCHOMMER
MUSIC BY KELLY CORDES

Thursday, July 14 at 7:30 pm

Everyone has a soundtrack to their life.  Memories and stories collide with a song in such a way that the minute you hear the song it takes you right back to that specific moment. “Mixtape!” is a brand new show which mixes comedy, storytelling and live music for an unexpected night looking back at the defining moments in one’s life.  Stories, anecdotes, and stand up comedy weave in and out with an eclectic soundtrack of a crazy life in unexpected ways.  Often hilarious, at times poignant, and always surprising...”Mixtape” is a memorable night out.  This collaborative show stars Jason Schommer taking center stage with tales from growing up in Little Falls to living and performing in New York City, Las Vegas, and Hollywood to surviving the ups and downs of everyday life.  Kelly Cordes performs the featured songs live during the show.  “Mixtape!” explores life from hanging out with friends in the Coborn’s parking lot and dreaming of the big time while Cyndi Lauper blares out of a boom box to standing on the streets of New York City while listening to musicals on a Sony Walkman to driving down Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood with the windows down as Cher is cranked up on the car radio, and so much more.  Wildly creative and adventurous, “Mixtape” is a one of kind show that everyone will leave everyone cheering.

Jason Schommer, named “What’s Hot For 2013” by Campus Activities Magazine, is a standup comedian and storyteller who spent two years as the opening act for comedy legend Louie Anderson in Las Vegas.  Louie Anderson says “You’ll love Jason.  Jason is funny, clever, smart, and on his way to the big time!”.  Laugh-until-you-cry stories combine with playful one liners as Jason covers a wide array of topics ranging from the daily struggles of life and his loveable, yet kooky, Minnesotan family.

Kelly Cordes is the co-host for the popular radio show “The Get Up and Go Show with Chad and Kelly” on Mix 94.9 True Variety and is from Princeton Minnesota. She has also lived in Wisconsin, Tennessee and Kentucky throughout her life, pursuing her broadcasting and musical dreams. Kelly has a passion for music. She's been a pianist, singer and songwriter since she was 13. Her album, "When Love Comes Knockin," features original material. Now back to her roots in Minnesota, Kelly is enjoying spending time with her children, and family pets Sampson the Great Dane and Mr. Bean, her British speaking Grey Tabby Cat.

Road-tested and always road-ready, The Church of Cash is celebrating the soul of American Music.

DECEMBER 12 & 13TH

THE SANTALAND DIARIES is a brilliant evocation of what a slacker's Christmas must feel like. Out of work, our slacker decides to become a Macy's elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa's workshop, he becomes battle weary and bitter. Taking consolation in the fact that some of the other elves were television extras on One Life to Live, he grins and bears it, occasionally taking out his frustrations on the children and parents alike. The piece ends with yet another Santa being ushered into the workshop, but this one is different from the lecherous or drunken ones with whom he has had to work. This Santa actually seems to care about and love the children who come to see him, startling our hero into an uncharacteristic moment of goodwill just before his employment runs out.

“I Just Wanted Candy:  Confessions of a Fat Kid”

by: Jason Schommer

7:30 pm

Tickets: $10 General Admission.

In this entirely brand new show, Jason hysterically performs, for the very first time, a collection of true stories from his life ranging from a few family vacations gone terribly wrong, awkward school memories, adventures on land and sea, a lifelong obsession with a pop star, surviving the grief of losing one’s parents, and the hard earned triumph of the underdog.  Hilarious, strange, witty, brave, surprising, and sometimes heartbreakingly sad these stories from Jason’s life illustrate our common struggles, unique bonds, and uncovers our connection to one another in unexpected ways…but yet still offers quite a few “Thank God it was him and not me!” moments.  “I Just Wanted Candy:  Confessions of a Fat Kid” ultimately celebrates life and all the twists and turns, ups and downs, and unexpected detours that spring up along the way from the cradle to the grave.

Jason Schommer is someone who will make you laugh and make you hungry for more.

Michael Shynes

show 8:00 pm

tickets $10

Little Falls born and raised Singer/Songwriter Michael Shynes to perform at The Great River Arts Center on April 19th at 8:00 pm.

Fans have been patiently waiting over two years for Michael's Sophomore effort after "Lifeline" drew much praise and acclaim from music heads and loyal supporters across the country. Rebecca Cicione of Columbia Records writes "Musically, I'm in love. His light, accessible, passionate sound is one that had me hitting the repeat button on one song for almost an hour."  And Diana Bonilla of the LA Examiner writes "The rising star creates an intimate environment through his music."

Over the last year, Shynes took several months off to be with his father as he battled a terminal illness. It was an experience that he drew on heavily when writing songs for this record.  "The way I see it, I could give his suffering meaning by allowing it to motivate me. The other option would be to let it completely consume me, and that would be giving the disease the glory." says Shynes.

"When Here and Now Becomes There and Then" features Michael's rare ability to blend virtually any genre of music over an acoustic landscape.  His atmospheric tones and understated percussion enable a musical place where stories can be told, and the vocal and lyrics retain the main focus. "I feel that as a singer/songwriters, we have the rare ability to speak directly with our listeners, and that has never been an opportunity I take lightly."

doors- 6:30 pm          show- 7:30 pm

Tickets: $10 available at GRA or online below

Cash beer & wine bar

“Talk of the Town” is a hilarious and outrageous look at small town life with Little Falls as its theme.  All the comedy sketches revolve around events, locations, personalities, issues, and figures of Little Falls.  Drawing material from everyday life in Little Falls the sketches take a hilarious spin on such subjects as The Arts and Craft Fair, Pine Grove Zoo, Charles Lindbergh House, PartyLine, urban chickens, the sign ordinance, and so much more!  What if Twitter existed when Charles A. Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic?  How will the other animals at Pine Grove Zoo react when one of them gets their big break and is transferred to the big city zoo in Minneapolis?  How wild and crazy would it be if Little Falls offered a guided bus tour of Little Falls and all of the tourist sites?  What if Prudence from Bowlus took a job as a tour guide at the museum home of a local hero and celebrity?  These are just a few of the many sketches that will come to life on the stage in this good-hearted comedy show celebrating Little Falls and the small town way of life that is unique to Central Minnesota.  “Talk of the Town” is not to be missed!
