JAMES GRAHAM Abstract painter
June through August 2008
Graham paints large, colourful abstract paintings. He currently resides in Hutchinson MN. This is his artist statement:

“I was born at the age of 0 on a mountaintop in Tennessee, bravest man the world ever did see, stared down a bear when I was only three then decided to become a painter. Moved west as a young man to seek my fortune in the town of Warner SD. It was there that I learned to read and spell and split logs. When it came to higher education I became a free agent, spending some time at Northern State in Aberdeen, SD before being called up to the University of South Dakota. While at college I was introduced to my three constant companions, my wife Tinea, Art, and the love of self-education. I have been a serious painter for 20 years, not so serious for about 5 years before that. I converse with artists both dead and living, likewise with poets, theologians, and philosophers. I am entering my mature phase as an artist – the paintings are dead serious and drop dead funny – so are meant for people with no fear of death. I invite you stop in and take a look during its showing in this beautiful community of Little Falls. I thank the people both past and present of the GRAA for their invitation.”

AINEZ HAYUNGA Landscapes & Flowers in oil
June through July 2008

Hayungs paints landscapes, florals, and nature scenes from South Texas and Minnesota. This is her biographical statement:

“I have been painting for 47 years. I always wanted to paint with oils and purchased a kit when I was a young mother and began with decorative and Tole painting. I later switched to landscapes and flowers. I have always used one brand of oils because I knew what colors I was going to get when I mixed them, and could find them any where I traveled in the U.S. and Mex. I also have painted using colored inks with some acrylic textures.
In the last 15 years I have painted scenes of the Baja on the Sea of Cortez. We spent 5 Winters there and I found many subjects. A few things that particularly struck me were the use of arches in the back walls of many buildings, in the rancho’s haciendas and also public buildings and that they usually lead into a garden. Bougainvillea has nearly gone wild and the colors are spectacular!
The sun is very strong and the land looks very blanched and faded, and as a consequence many people use vivid colors on their homes, buildings and in their clothing.
We were fortunate on one trip home to see the desert bloom and it was a fantastic sight, as if everything had to bloom within 2 days!

God has put beauty all around us wherever we are and we can paint to share everything we see.”

Local Artist Places Third in Watercolor at the 2007 MN State Fair Fine Arts Competition.

Great River Arts Association member and Little Falls resident, Kathy Braud will be showing a selection of her recent watercolors at the Sherburne County Government Center, Elk River, September 6th through October 5th. She also has several entries on display at the US Bank Art Exhibit Sept. 18 – Oct 18, and hopes to be included in the People for the Steeple exhibit at the Paramount Arts District Oct 2 – Nov 9, both exhibits are in downtown St. Cloud.

Kathy Braud's watercolors explore the vibrant boundary between realism and abstraction. Her dramatic value contrasts add an air of mystery to her work. Floral still life, landscapes, figurative and action subjects are all explored with equal aplomb.
She is a signature member of Red River Watercolor Society, and Vice President and Workshop Chair of Central Minnesota Watercolorists. She is also a member of Minnesota Watercolor Society, Northstar Watercolor Society, Artists of Minnesota, Artists del Norte, The Crossing Arts Alliance and others.

Ms. Braud also teaches watercolor regionally and taught at one summer Montana Art Experience workshop near Glacier National Park. She just attended an Artist Paint Out for a week near Onamia, and she is interested in bringing artists together to learn and grow.

Braud is the recipient of Third Place at the 2007 Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition for her watercolor Park Trails. She has also been the recipient of four Five Wings McKnight Individual Artist Grants and is on the Minnesota Arts Board “Arts in Education” Roster 2007-2008.
